Inside Bulgaria's Easter Celebrations: Traditions Passed Through Generations
Today marks the joyous celebration of Easter, one of the most significant holidays in the Orthodox Christian calendar.
Bulgaria’s Patriotic Front has tied continued support for the minority coalition government of Prime Minister Boyko Borisov to rejection of President’s veto on disputed changes to the Electoral Code.
"If the veto is rejected, we have no problem and we will continue to do what we’ve done so far," Valeri Simeonov, co-leader of the Patriotic Front and chairman of its parliamentary faction told reporters on Tuesday.
Simeonov spoke shortly after President Rosen Plevneliev referred back to Parlaiment recently adopted changes to election rules which concern voting abroad. According to Plevneliev, setting caps on the number of polling stations abroad will hamper voting by Bulgarian citizens residing in other countries.
When asked to comment on the resignation of Deputy Prime Minister and Labour Minister Ivaylo Kalfin and the stated intention of Kalfin’s left-wing political party ABV to withdraw its support for Borisov’s right-of-centre cabinet, Simeonov said that the majority backing the cabinet in Parliament had no problem with those developments.
He also dismissed suggestions that Kalfin’s resignation would lead to early elections. He explained ABV’s move with desire to seek united action with the Socialists, just days after the second-biggest opposition force in Parliament elected its new leader, Korneliya Ninova.
